CLUB CONSULTING
WEB SITE Successful businesses have the means in which to communicate efficiently and effectively to its constituents. Organization must have a means to enable its current and potential members accessibility to pertinent information. This extensive information can only be attained on a web site. Club philosophy, policy and procedures, calendar of events, tryouts, field locations, critical contact information, a quarterly newsletter, and tournament information. A web site has the ability to email its entire member base urgent last minute changes as well as receive members feedback. With no office that members are able to physically walk into, the board needs to be proactive in its ability to communicate to its members. Most importantly, it needs to be user friendly!!!
POLICY & PROCEDURE MANUAL
A policy and procedure manual is an important starting point for any discussion. This is an important undertaking by any board. Once policies and procedures are in writing guidelines for running a smooth and efficient club are there. To many clubs are shooting from the hip.
FIELDS A club must make a concerted effort to acquire land for a soccer complex. Once the web site is up and running and the policy and procedure manual is in place, it is imperative to begin working on the procurement of land for the following reasons:
To have adequate practice space for the entire club (30 teams x 3 practices a week) you would need to have 8 soccer fields. Two teams would split a field allowing 16 teams to train at once. You would be able to accommodate an additional 16 teams the second session. The additional two days would then be used for goalkeeper training and running mechanics. Allows for additional growth in teams.
To have a U10 program in conjunction with park & recreation department
To have club tournaments
Increase the clubs identity
Establish corporate sponsorship
Club loyalty and unity
Effective training sessions
To host the State, Regional and National Championships
AGE GROUP PHILOSOPHY
As a collegiate Division I soccer coach, who sees the highest level of soccer each and everyday, I have an understanding of what the finished product should look like. I understand the infrastructure that needs to be in place in order for players to be successful. I understand the process is in itself a process that takes much time and commitment.
A club needs to foster the development of its players by having multiple teams within each age group. A red and a blue team need to be formed in each age group and when necessary a white team. By having multiple teams per age group you are providing greater opportunities for those players who presently are physically immature but technically gifted. Due to your limited player pool size its important to protect and encourage the player whom is developing at a slower rate. It is important to develop all potential talent, giving players the opportunity to develop at their own rate. Research has provided further evidence that physical growth does not maintain pace with chronological growth. Therefore many players of equal talent are overlooked due to physical maturity. We must be sensitive to this fact in the selection process.
U11-U12 To encourage all our players to increase their ball handling skills. Practices need to be set up to encourage numerous touches on the ball and coaches need to be precise regarding their instructions. More importantly is the manner in which the coaches on a consistent basis reinforce these techniques in practice. A special emphasis needs to be placed on these specific techniques.
Heading-to score and to clear
Passing- inside the foot, outside the foot, instep, heel
Receiving-inside the foot, outside the foot, instep
Finishing- instep, inside the foot
Tackling
Dribbling-Wiel Coerver, Speed Dribbling, Cutting
Juggling
A club needs to allow players the opportunity to experience various positions. The most athletic players need to play in goal, as it can be a demoralizing experience for a young player. Players need to understand leadership roles and the importance of leading as well as learning how to follow within the team. It is important to establish a high behavioral standard for players and teams while keeping it fun and competitive. Tactically, the most critical element is teaching the players how to attack and create goal-scoring opportunities through high pressure. This is only possible through learning accountability in a man to man scheme.
U13-U14 It is vital for the players to have a mastery of the heading, passing, receiving, finishing, tackling (slide and block), dribbling (wiel coerver, speed dribbling, cutting) and juggling.
In addition, players should be learning:
How to break down opponents in the final 1/3rds through pattern play.
Understanding of defensive schemes
Compactness and shape
Transition through the 1/3rds defensively
Running mechanics (pure speed, mobility, endurance, explosive, durability)
Set pieces
Ability to strike balls over greater distances
Players who become students of the game
Players of great character (humorous, energetic, passionate)
The most important aspect for any training session is the feedback given to players and their parents. This is especially important with the younger players as they progress. By documenting their progress, there is little room for argument as to where the improvement needs to be made. If improvements are not made then the process takes care of itself and justification can be made for promotion and relegation with the Red, Blue or White teams. Thus the player's technical report will serve in cutting down on the problems associated with tryouts. Each player will know where he or she stands prior to the event.
SPONSORSHIP Clubs need to move to an all club deal that will give them an identity. This is an important step that must be taken. When one goes to a tournament, teams are identified across a complex by their uniforms. It shows a professional organization. This will put coaches into free gear, and provide sponsorship of your tournament.
CAMPS
There needs to be a high end camp offered. A mandatory camp with the 10-14 year olds from 9-12 in the morning and a high school preparatory camp from 5-8 in the evening. Money raised could be used to cover the cost of the consultant, gifts, coaches.
TOURNAMENTS
The club needs to bring teams from all over the country.
Set a date and have it that same date each and every year.
A tournament committee needs to be formed.
Develop an attractive brochure.
Target the U11-U14 age groups due to a lacking tournament site.
Quality vs. Quantity
Make sure the tournament is a sanctioned event.
Find hotel, restaurants for sponsorship.
Due cost analyses break down.
Reserve hotel rooms.
Put on web site.
Build database.
BOARD MEETINGS Board meetings need not last more than 1½ hours. Anything longer is a waste of time to those whom are already volunteering their time. Time is precious and burnout is the #1 reason that great people quit and move on.
Board meetings need to be organized, run efficiently and any topic that gets bogged down, needs to be tabled for a future board vote.
Each board member needs to receive the agenda 2 days prior to the official board meeting. This will give each board member time to look over the upcoming agenda as well as review the minutes from last month. This will allow the minutes to be voted on quickly and all board members will be aware of the current agenda items.
Board members need to have an update regarding their specific board position or committee that is e-mailed or handed to the secretary prior to each board meeting. This report is then e-mailed to all board members the following month with the upcoming agenda.
If a board member needs to have action taken regarding any issue at a board meeting, then the issue needs to be on the upcoming agenda. One cannot expect action to be taken or heard during a board meeting that has not been listed on the agenda. No surprises!
